Wellsville Lions Club

History of the Wellsville Lions Club

The Wellsville Lions Club was chartered in 1942. The members of the Lions Club have been serving the community of Wellsville in accordance with the stated goals of Lions Clubs International. The international organization states that: “The purpose of the Lions Club is to determine community needs and develop means of meeting them, either through its own efforts or in cooperation with other agencies or organizations.”

In their committment to meet these goals, the members of the Wellsville Lions Club have proven to be ambitious, resourceful and willing to work hard. They have created and developed events that draw hundreds and thousands of participants in order to raise funds. Many of those events will be included on this website, but the Annual Wellsville Area Trout Derby is one example a creative and successful venture. Through the ingenuity and effort of the Lions, the Trout Derby attracts over a thousand participants each year and provides the Lions with significant income to meet their goals. 2024 is the 34th year for this popular event that attracts fishermen from across New York and surrounding states.

Throughout the year, the Wellsville Lions club continues its work in the community with events such as the World Service Day when hundreds of meals are served to the area’s senior citizens, the Fantasy of Lights where the library lawn is turned into a Christmas wonderland, and the newly organized Wellsville’s Got Talent show where local acts demonstrate their talents on stage for an appreciative audience. Through the years, these and otherĀ  fundraising events have generated enough income for the Wellsville Lions Club to have provided over a million and a half dollars in support for the various needs of the surrounding community.

While the members of the Lions Club go about their work quietly and raise significant funds for community needs, these efforts don’t necessarily go unnoticed. Recently, the Allegany County Legislature recognized the Wellsville Lions Club for its work with the passing of Resolution No. 89-24. The resolution summarizes the accomplishments of the Wellsville Lions Club and expresses its gratitude to the past and present members. It is included below along with a picture of the current members who attended the presentation of the Resolution.
